Analysis of a good example of a music video

Its hard to chose the best music video as there are so much and barley that I can remember, so this music video I chose to analysis I probably not the one I think is the best example of a music video. Its just the best one I can think to remember right now.  I have chosen to analysis two music video because one video would in the past be seen as a good music video but now as society is changing, people’s opinions on what makes a good music video is changing. So the first example is Madonna – Vogue.

I chose this music video as good example of a music video because it is a good in the sense of media language. Although it is black and white – which is to further illustrate the era of the mise en scene in that video – the editing is really strong. Although the cuts and really simple, they are fast paced and to the beat of the music but also non continuous. This keeps the audience interested and entertained.  There seems to be a clear theme throughout the video, but no clear narrative as the narrative seems to be about a dance – vogue- it just shows different people vouging. The mise en scene was good and consistent, and there was a variety of shots and locations. This music video, in its time was greatly successful and in turn inspired one the most famous dance moves.

The other video I’m going to analyse is Lady Gaga – Bad Romance. I chose to analyse this video because after momentarily passing Justin Bieber – Baby, it was the highest viewed video on Youtube – a big source of distribution for many people today, as far as how they as an audience get to know about it, and also can be a source for marketing. So this I thought would be a good music to analyse seeing as the public seemed to think it was at the best music video. However I think one major reason this had the highest rated views was due to her large fan base (which also goes for Justin Bieber). But another reason why it could be so popular could be because of the controversy around her image and within her music videos, and that’s why I earlier talked about the important of controversy. And although Madonna brought controversy, it wasn’t in as big as a digital age that we are in now, so here publicity didn’t sky rocket quite the same or under the same manner.
Now the less lets take a look at the video.

Reasons I have concluded for why this video is successful in both selling the song and promoting the artist is for a variety of reasons. The costume and other aspects of mise en scene throughout the video are outrageous and very weird, portraying a mutant-like theme. This brings in an audience because of the theatricality. Also special effects such as slow motion, very fast changing to slow and fast motion at times to cause a twitching effect, freezing, and Lady Gaga’s exaggerated eyes all extended her theme and draw attention to herself. Her video gives an out of this world appeal – which is also ironic to her image because she can be seen as so eccentric and different, it’s almost alien.  The video also includes very fast cuts that are non-continuous and huge variety of shots. It also contains a lot of product placement. These types of things is what seems to make for a successful music video in this day and age, but it displace past successful music videos, rather it extends it.

When I make my music video I will try to incorporate what these two videos have done to make it successful so my video can be steering down the same path of that success.
