Andrew Goodwin’s theory

Andrew Goodwin states that pop videos are built around the song, uses the singer both as narrator and as character and singer often looks directly at the camera while trying to involve the viewer at home with a performance – making music videos different from novels and films.  An example of a music video where this is shown is Cee Lo Green – Forget You.

The narrative is about a girl which rejects him and he then ends up being successful and she’s poor. In this video Cee Lo Green acts as participant and narrator. We see him sing, looking at the camera, all throughout the video – which then makes him the main focus.

Andrew Goodwin says there are three types of relations between songs and videos:
·      Illustration – This is where the video tells the story of the lyrics. “If I Were a Boy” by Beyonce is an example. Also in some music videos dance is used to express the feelings in the song. This is an example of illustration because in the video she acts out the exact lyrics of the song.

·      Amplification – This when the video introduces new meaning that do not contradict with the lyrics but add lyrics of meaning.

·      Disjuncture – This is where there is little connection between the lyrics and video or where the video contradicts the lyrics. Kanye West – Runaway, is an example because the video bears no connection to the lyrics which is about breaking up, but the video depicts him playing a piano at a dinner party while ballerinas dance to the song. However it could be argued that the dance of the ballerinas in this video is used to express the feelings in the song.
