The power of social networking.

How the industry uses Social Networking Sites.

To help promote our artist, social networking should be one of our main ways to promote her. This is because it is a huge audience. Almost everyone with access to a computer and the internet is a member of at least one social networking site, whether its facebook or twitter. They help artists promote themselves and their music for free and to people all over the world. This is especially good for unsigned artists or recently signed ones as they can create a massive fanbase before appearing everywhere. The most famous example would be Justin Beiber, who started posting videos on YouTube and then opened a twitter account, which in November 2010 was reported to have over 6million followers. Obviously since then it has grown.

Artists like Lily Allen, Chemical Brothers and the Arctis Monkeys also used scial media to create a fan base. But, they used MySpace, something which is now, basically dead. No one really uses it but back in the days (a couple of years ago) it was super popular and they came to fame via this social networking site.

This is video is an interview with Meredith Chin from Facebook who tells us how music artists can create their own fanbase just by using Facebook. When we promote our artist we would most definately use Facebook as one the places to build our fanbase simply because of the amount of people we have access to. By us creating a page, we can link a website/blog that our artist could have, other social networking sites like Twitter and Tumblr and link, obviously, her YouTube page.
